The Miners headed west for Exit 1 on interstate 94 for the South West Region meet in Beach on Tuesday May 12th. The Miners looked to pick up a few more qualifiers and to possible contend for a top spot in the team points race. At regionals an athlete can qualify by making the qualification standard or placing Top 3 in an event. The Miners did add 8 new kids to the list of qualifiers and picked up 3 more events for people to watch the Miners compete in at the State Meet. The day had a lot of good moments mixed with a few down moments for the Miners. As coaches we always hope for the best but we know sometimes things don't go as planned.
The Boys started with some new qualifiers in the Boys 4x800 relay team. The relay team comprised of Sebastian Nichols, Daniel Blackhurst, Hudson Scheurer, and Owen Ziman came into the race ranked 4th as a team but finished 2nd in the race. This qualified them for the state meet by place. Right after the relay was the 300m Hurdles with Cooper Schepp. Cooper ended up 3rd overall and qualifying him for another event at state. Cooper also ran the 110m Hurdles and won the event by a whole second with a time of 15.56. This time again lowers his current school record. For the boys they didn't have any other Top 3 finishers on the day. The boys had a few lows on the day with having some high hopes for the 4x100 relay and the boys discus having 2 of the top 8 throwers in the region. Neither discus boy placed and the 4x100 relay had a dropped exchange causing them to only place 7th. The boys did have other placers in Jonas Braun placing 6th in the 100m, Owen Ziman 7th in the 400m, Daniel Blackhurst 7th in the 1600m, 4x200 relay placed 6th, 4x400 relay placed 8th, Anthony Hallett 5th in Shot Put, and Shane Schmidt 6th in Javelin. Overall the boys finished 6th as a team. The Boys have 7 that have qualified for the state meet in Cooper Schepp (110m/300m Hurdles), Anthony Hallett (Discus), Brady Schaner (Discus), Sebastian Nichols (4x800), Daniel Blackhurst (4x800), Hudson Scheurer (4x800), and Owen Ziman (4x800). The boys will try on Friday to add a few more boys as they will have to try to qualify the 4x100 relay by time and Anthony will try to get Shot Put added to his list.
For the Girls they started out strong with a great performance in High Jump from Brooklyn Byrum as she finished 2nd overall with a height of 4' 10" and qualified for state by place. The Girls 4x200 was next as they ran a time of 1:50.15 and placed 2nd overall. This time is a qualifying time and the relay was made of Elva Jasso, RyLee Yantzer, Braelyn Hottman, and Addison Schepp. Speaking of Addison Schepp she was busy in her individual events with winning the 300m Hurdles, 100m Hurdles, and Long Jump. On the Throwers side of things Malayah Williams came in as the leader in Shot Put and lead the event the whole way and had her best throw of 40' 7" on her last attempt. Addison Dale-Geiger came in as the favorite to win the Javelin and did just that with a throw of 113' 10". As a bit of a surprise in Javelin was Tori Ziman as she threw a new PR of 104' 4" and taking 2nd overall which qualifies her by place. In Discus Bailey Buchfinch placed 3rd with a new PR of 117' 6". Bailey also took 3rd in Triple Jump with a jump of 31' 4" this qualified her by place. The girls also had girls place in other events with Isabelle Schnaidt 6th in the100m, 4th in the High Jump, Braelyn Hottman 7th in the 200m, 8th in the 300m Hurdles, 5th in the Javelin, Keelyn Barmoen 8th 100m Hurdles, Elva Jasso 4th in the 300m Hurdles, 4x100 relay placed 6th, 4x400 relay placed 5th, 4x800 relay placed 6th, Bailey Buchfinck 8th in the Shot Put, Malayah Williams 4th in the Discus, Tori Ziman 6th in the Discus, Paige Elliott 7th in the High Jump, and Tinley Kraft 8th in the Triple Jump.
